"Root canal" still makes people wince - but the reputation is decades out of date. Today the procedure relieves pain rather than causing it, and at Vista Smiles most cases are completed in a single sitting.
When is a root canal needed?
When the pulp (nerve and blood supply) inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed - usually from deep decay, a crack, or trauma. Signs include:
- lingering pain with hot or cold
- pain on biting
- swelling or a pimple on the gum
- a tooth that has darkened
How single-sitting RCT works
- Numbing. Local anaesthesia makes the tooth completely numb.
- Access. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth.
- Cleaning & shaping. Rotary instruments and an apex locator let us clean and shape the canals precisely.
- Filling. The canals are sealed with a biocompatible material.
- Restoration. A temporary or permanent filling is placed. Back teeth almost always need a crown afterwards to prevent fracture.
Who may still need multiple visits?
Teeth with large abscesses, severe swelling, or very curved/complex canals may need a medicament placed for a week or two before sealing. Your dentist will tell you at the start.
Recovery
Mild soreness for 1–3 days is normal and responds well to ordinary painkillers. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until the permanent crown is fitted.
