How Often Should You Really Visit the Dentist?

The six-month rule is a good default, but the right check-up interval depends on your gums, habits and history. Here's how to work out yours.

Most of us have heard "see your dentist every six months". It's good advice for many people - but it isn't a rule of nature. The right interval depends on your mouth.

Why check-ups matter even when nothing hurts

Early tooth decay and gum disease are usually painless. By the time a tooth aches, the cavity has often reached the nerve and a simple filling has become a root canal. A routine examination (with a digital X-ray when needed) lets us catch problems while they are small, cheap and quick to fix.

Who should come more often?

Who can stretch it out?

If you have healthy gums, no fillings in years and excellent home care, your dentist may be comfortable seeing you once a year. We'll tell you honestly.

What happens at a check-up?

  1. A look at your teeth, gums, tongue and soft tissues (including an oral cancer screen)
  2. Digital X-rays if it's been a while or something needs a closer look
  3. Ultrasonic scaling and polishing to remove tartar and stains
  4. Personalised advice - brushing technique, diet, and any treatment you might need

Children

Children should see a dentist by their first birthday and then at least yearly. Early visits build confidence and let us apply fluoride and sealants that prevent decay before it starts.

Not sure when your last visit was? That's usually a sign it's time. Book a check-up at our Kolkata or Mecheda clinic.
